Queensland, Australia — WBC Amateur Muay Thai Australia is proud to announce a major initiative to support and grow the sport of Muay Thai across Central and North Queensland, with a focus on regional development, athlete experience, and official pathways.

In alignment with WBC's national vision to cultivate a structured and supportive environment for emerging athletes, the organisation will be rolling out frequent sparring and development days across key regional centres. These events are designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and professionally supervised platform for grassroots participants to build ring experience, confidence, and technical skill.

"Regional Queensland has always had a strong combat sports culture, but limited access to structured opportunities has often been a barrier for talent outside the major metro areas," said Torin OBrien from WBC Amateur Muay Thai Australia. "Our goal is to change that by investing in consistent, quality development pathways at the regional level."

These development days will serve as stepping stones toward more formal amateur promotions in the future, creating a long-term ecosystem that benefits athletes, coaches, officials, and gyms across the state. Each event will prioritise safety, education, and fair play, ensuring new athletes can gain experience in a controlled, non-intimidating environment.

In addition to fighter development, WBC Amateur Muay Thai will also focus on training and upskilling officials in the region. This includes judges, referees, and timekeepers, all of whom are critical to the sport's integrity and future growth. Through practical experience and nationally recognised education pathways, the initiative aims to empower local communities to run high-standard events autonomously.

Key Highlights of the Regional Initiative:

  • Frequent Sparring & Development Days: Starting Q2 2025 across Central and North Queensland.

  • Pathway to Promotions: Building toward a calendar of WBC Amateur-sanctioned events in the region.

  • Development of Officials: Courses, mentorship, and on-the-ground experience to grow regional capability.

  • Community-Driven Focus: Supporting local gyms and coaches to bring opportunities to their athletes.

  • Safety First: All activities aligned with WBC Amateur Muay Thai Australia's national safety and conduct standards.

Gyms, coaches, athletes, and volunteers in the region are encouraged to get involved and register their interest to support the next generation of Queensland Muay Thai athletes.

This initiative marks another milestone in WBC Amateur Muay Thai Australia's ongoing commitment to building the future of the sport—one region at a time.
